Getting Started with Internet TV and Video
We've talked with the technology folks at Mogulus - our Internet television partner - to come up with some recommendations to ease your viewing experience of Internet television and video. Together, we identified some conditions and equipment viewers should have to successfully access Internet television and video online.
If you still have questions after you've read this page, go to the Mogulus Support Center.
First, let's list the basic equipment and Internet access details viewers need to watch Internet television (Mogulus) and video (You Tube):
- Connecting to the Internet. You will need an Internet connection measuring not less than 400 kb/s - See Wikipedia: A kilobit per second (kbit/s or kb/s or kbps). If you are using a mobile device, at home or at the office, your Internet access can be a DSL connection, but a Cable modem connection will be better. If you use a DSL connection, speeds and bandwidth may vary according to the "volume" of traffic on the Internet at any one time of the day. More traffic = less connectivity; less traffic = better connectivity. Libraries and Universities and Colleges generally offer better bandwidth access.
- Choice of Browser. We spoke with the Mogulus Internet television team and they recommend Mac OSX, prefer Firefox, or Safari. All browsers are easily downloaded for free from the Internet.
- Open Source Systems. Any suped up Mac will do!
- Preferred Processor speed: 2 GH. If you have purchased your computer within the last two years you should be okay and able to accommodate 1.75 GH.
- RAM: Mogulus recommends the minimum of 1G
- Speed Test: Test your Internet speed with the free tool: SpeedTest: The Global Broadband Speed Test.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mbit/s#megabit_per_second
Q: What's the difference between "streaming" internet television - such as Mogulus Internet Television - and "archived" video - such as You Tube?
Streaming is playing audio/video content in real time through the Internet. This does not eat up any space on your computer's hard drive.
A fast Internet connection is required to view the videos at its clearest because the video quality is dependent on the speed of your connection. If you experience frequent pauses or buffering on your viewing or if you're not satisfied with the quality, consider downloading the clip (if possible).
Downloading is transferring data from a server into your own computer. You need to have sufficient hard drive space to be able to save the content.
Although downloading may take some time, the advantages are that you can watch the content anytime since it's already saved in your computer and you don't need to be connected to the Internet to watch the video. The video will also be of higher quality with no interruptions upon playback.
Q: What is an Internet TV "player"?
A "player' is the term given to describe the web tool that delivers the Internet TV channel content to your web page so you can watch the programs. Players are also referred to as a "widget" - a portable chunk of code that can be embedded in a web page. There are thousands of widgets that perform services for us. An example of one is this date countdown widget.
Q: When my Welcome page finishes loading, I can see a program already in progress. Where is that content coming from?
You are viewing the "Auto Pilot" selection. The Auto Pilot broadcasts content pre-selected by the channel's Manager. It is generally chosen because of timeliness of content or it is a featured interview(s).
Q: What does the "On-Demand" title on the right side of the player mean?
There are three ways of viewing programs on the Internet TV player. The first is to watch a Live Show as it is broadcast. The second is to watch the pre-selected Auto Pilot program that is automatically running on your player as the web page downloads.
The third option, is for you to make your own selection from the "On-Demand" area located on the right side of your player. Use your curser to scroll the right hand vertical side bar up and down to make your selection from the On-Demand column. The On-Demand half of the player contains different Folders of programs, or categories of content that may be of interest to you. Within each Folder may be one or more programs or interviews that fall into that category of topic.
For example, the Folder entitled, "Women's Enterprise Network Live Shows" will contain all of the Live Shows taped and archived to date; other Folders will contain pre-recorded interviews or Internet video search results of interest selected by the Channel manager.
Q: What does "Live Show" mean?
Live Show means that 'Live Show' broadcast you are viewing was broadcast as it was happening on the Channel. Our preferred Internet TV provider, Mogulus, allows us to broadcast any content live and once the program has concluded, save up to five hours of content to our channel for you to look at again later, or look at if you missed the Live Show.
Mogulus has figured out a way to shift the traditional latency of broadcast - or delay - from 20 seconds to one second. This is powerful in that what you experience is 19 seconds closer to you!
Q: How do I participate in the chat?
First of all, the chat function is best experienced off of the Mogulus Channel page, rather than off of a player widget. You can get to the Mogulus Channel page directly by clicking the Mogulus name at the upper right corner of the player. Your Channel will open in a new window.
Click on the chat tab to make the chat appear if it doesn't already. Once you have done that, choose a nickname for yourself. We prefer first names on chat for the sake of conversation. Your name will appear appear next to what you say in the course of conversation above and will be how others will identify you. Type your text in the space bar located at the lower right area. You can change the style, font and color of your text by clicking on the related icons on the left. Once you are finished with your comment, simply click return and your comment will be published. If your comment is longer than the space allows for, click what fits, publish, and continue with your comment, clicking return again, once you have completed your idea.
Once you're done, press enter or click on the 'say' button.
Q: Are there some simple guides I should keep in mind when participating in chat?
Yes, definitely.
- It's a good idea to remember you are participating in a conversation with others you may or may not know. Be hospitable, and act as a guest. Identify yourself and where you are from. Offer your Blog or web site address so you can continue the conversations following the Show.
- Use this conversation as an opportunity to learn from others and to build your networks to other like minded individuals from anywhere.
- Ask intelligent questions. Help to hone in on important points of information being presented. Offer supportive links you have simultaneously researched as the conversation is in process.
- Speak intelligently, share your knowledge, and keep in mind you are contributing what you know to help elevate the level of conversation, so that everyone can learn together in a civilized and inclusive manner.
- Be appreciative in your comments; everyone has a valid viewpoint and idea.
- Simply don't engage in conversation you consider negative, off topic (unless of course you wish to explore a new point), or demeaning to the conversation.
- Your pro-active leadership in the conversation will encourage others to reciprocate contributing at the same level of quality; heightening the learning and helping to build new, positive online connections.
